Many applications require the ability to maintain a certain temperature or alert users of a high or low-temperature condition. This can be done by using a temperature sensing device. Three of the most common devices are Thermostats, Thermocouples, and Thermistors. These devices can be used on their own or in conjunction with a float switch to combine level and temperature into one convenient product. RTD |
RTD’s are stable and have a fairly wide temperature range, but are not as rugged and inexpensive as thermocouples. Since they require the use of electric current to make measurements, RTD’s are subject to inaccuracies from self-heating. RTD’s rely on the resistance change in a metal. The resistance will rise more or less linearly with temperature. Traditionally, RTD’s use a length of conductor (platinum, nickel iron or copper) wound around an insulator. Newer styles use a thin film of the conductor deposited on a ceramic substrate. RTD’s are used to measure temperatures from -196° to 482° C (-320° to 900° F)

Thermocouple
|
Thermocouples are constructed from two wires made of dissimilar metals that generate a small voltage as the temperature difference between the junctions change. Use Thermocouples when you need to get quick temperature response as in machines that heat up from 75°F to 375°F in 5 minutes. Thermocouples are the best choice for machines that produce a lot of vibration such as hot stamping machines, hydraulic presses, and packaging machines, due to their ruggedness and simplicity. They are also best for use in very high-temperature applications.

Thermistor
|
Thermistors are semiconductor materials whose electrical resistance can be any value from 100 ohms to 1,000,000 ohms at 25°C. Thermistors are excellent sensing devices to use in low-temperature applications such as film processing equipment, spas, water baths, refrigerated systems, food warming trays, and other similar devices. Thermistors should always be used where it is essential to stay at a constant temperature and have confidence that your system is accurate and will remain stable.
